John Howland was Quaker? "At the hight of the Quaker troubles he was dropped from the General Court, probably because he was found to be to liberal for the times. Gov. Prence did not stint his evidences of disapprobation when a man differed from him with regard to the Quakers." He lived CA at Duxbury, Plymouth Colony. He was born in 1592 at Fenstanton, Camb, England. He was the son of Henry Howland and Alice Aires. John Howland vacationed in 1620 at Mayflower; Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, USA; Extract from MS of Princes Annals, from lost MS of Bradford's History. "In a mighty storm, JOHN HOWLAND, a passenger, a stout young man [28 at the time ed.] by a keel of ye ship [?] was throughn into ye sea. But it pleased God, He caught hold of ye topsail Halliards we hung overboard and run out ye length: yet He kept his hold, tho several fathoms under water, 'till He was[ failed to copy rest from April 1848 p 187-8 of register]. He immigrated on Sailed as member of John Carver's family. (Servant?) He fell overboard during a storm in the mid-Atlantic, and was saved from death by an halyard trailing behind the ship. He was pulled back by a boathook. Gov. Bradford writes about the incident, referring to "a lustie young man" and states "and though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after, and became a profitable member both in church and commenwealth." Debt owed Merchant Advent, Plymouth Colony; "In 1626 John Howland was one of "ye cheefe of ye place", along with Bradford, Brewster, Standish and others, who assumed on behalf of the whole colony the debt owed the Merchant Adventurers- eighteen hundred pounds. This was a heavy burdon, but was eventually discharged by them." He was Appointed in 1630 at Alternate to Miles Standish, Plymouth Colony; "In 1630, with Edward Winslow and John Alden, he was appointed as an alternate to Miles Standish who was the attorney for the Warwick Patent, sent over by the Council For New England." He appeared on the census of 1642 at 1642, Barnstable, Plymouth Colony. He was MIGRATION before 1665 at Plymouth; Kingston, Kingston, Plymouth, MA, USA. He died on 23 February 1672/73 at Kingston, Plymouth, MA, USA; The 23rd of February, 1672, Mr. John Howland, Senior, of the towne of Plymouth, deceased. Hee was a godly man and an ancient professor in the wayes of Christ; hee liued vntill hee attained aboue eighty yeares in the world. Hee was one of the first comers into this land, and proued a vsefull instrument of good in his place, & was the last man that was left of those that came over on the shipp called the May Flower, that liued in Plymouth; he was with honor intered att the towne of Plymouth on the 25th of February, 1672." He was buried in 1673 at Plymouth Colony; "and was with onor interred. This was accorded only the leaders of the Colony, and meant that a squad of soldiers fired a volley over his grave. He is described as a "Godly man and an ancient professor in the ways of Christ, one of the first-comers, and proved useful instrument of good in the place."
